communities of practice - professional/corporate/government - the darden communities of practice

Detailed Description:

Northrop Grumman, IT (NG) sends some of its top executives and up and comers to a highly prestigious four and a half day customized program at the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. To date there are approximately 960 alumni members, from a total of fifteen classes. It is offered up to four times per year with a class size of forty to fifty students. The program is coordinated through a headquarters function of NG, Learning and Development. This intense class (or program) is a way for executives, or soon to be executives, to learn about the challenge of transformational leadership practices, work through problems in these areas, and network with their constituents. One challenge the participants face is keeping the principles and practice alive after they are back in their work lives with the same old routines and problems that plague the average executive or manager at NG. So the Darden program manager feels that there needs to be a vehicle for Darden Alumni to communicate and use resources for leadership and management practices.

Learning Outcomes:

The learner will be able to:

    • Foster interaction between new leaders who have recently attended Darden and seasoned experienced alumni.
    • Share and support the common leadership practices learned through the Darden program.
    • Build mentor – protégé relationships within the various business units and knowledge domains.
    • Promote retention and transfer of knowledge management throughout the two sectors.
    • Build a culture of transformational leaders through the community; and transfer into the sectors.
    • Identify new ‘Dardenesque’ transformational leadership techniques that can be implemented within the sectors to address leadership issues.
